Table Tennis Scoring
Table Tennis Scoring
Geilio Scoreboard follows official ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) rules, keeping track of points, serves, and set progression so you can stay focused on the rally.
How a Match Works
A table tennis match is played with each set going to 11 points. Before starting, you choose the match format -- a single deciding game, best of 3, best of 5, or best of 7 (that is, 1 / 3 / 5 / 7 sets):
- Best of 3 sets -- first to win 2 sets
- Best of 5 sets -- first to win 3 sets (common in most competitions)
- Best of 7 sets -- first to win 4 sets (used in major finals and international events)
Pick the format that fits your match, and the app tracks set wins and determines the match winner automatically. You can also customize each set's target score in Settings (5--99).
Singles and Doubles
Select singles or doubles when setting up your match. In singles, two players alternate serves. In doubles, Geilio Scoreboard adds rotation tracking to make sure each player serves and receives in the correct order throughout the set.
Serve Rotation
In standard play, the serve alternates every 2 points. Player A serves twice, then Player B serves twice, and so on. Geilio Scoreboard counts the points and clearly displays who is serving at all times.
This rhythm continues until the set is decided -- or until the score reaches deuce.
Deuce at 10-10
When the score reaches 10-10, the serve pattern changes:
- The serve now alternates every single point instead of every 2 points.
- A player must win by a 2-point lead to take the set. So 12-10 wins the set, but 11-10 does not.
There is no score cap in table tennis deuce -- the set continues until one player pulls ahead by 2. Geilio Scoreboard handles this seamlessly, switching the serve pattern the moment deuce begins and ending the set as soon as the lead is established.
Doubles Rotation
In doubles, table tennis has a strict rotation order that applies to both serving and receiving:
- The serving pair takes turns serving across sets.
- Within a set, after each 2-point serving block, the serve passes to the next player in the rotation.
- The receiving player also rotates, so each player both serves and receives in a defined order.
Geilio Scoreboard tracks this full rotation automatically. In Settings you can turn on the serve indicator (free) to mark which side is currently serving, and in doubles you can enable advanced serve indication (Pro) to also show exactly which player is serving. When deuce hits in doubles, the same every-point serve alternation applies, and Geilio Scoreboard adjusts the rotation accordingly.
International Announcement Mode
Like badminton, table tennis offers two styles of voice announcements (a Pro feature, iPhone only). In Settings you can switch its "announcement mode" from Default to International.
- In International mode, the app uses the standard competition phrasing for the start of play, each point, game point, and the end of a game, and announces only the score itself (such as "eleven -- nine") -- making it more concise and closer to an official match. Serve changes get no special treatment.
- Default mode uses more conversational phrasing.
This setting only affects the wording of the voice announcements; it doesn't change serve rotation or any scoring rule.
